The bill had been approved by the parliament after multiple rounds of talks between the PML-N government and opposition parties.

Military courts were first set up by the parliament in early 2015 in response to an attack by Tehreek-e-Taliban terrorist on Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar that killed 134 children. The tenure of military courts had expired on January 7, 2017.

So far, the courts have delivered 275 convictions, including 161 death sentences, and carried out 17 executions.
